Description
Summary:The growing demand for coffee at the global level offers a positive scenario in relation to the incomes of the producing countries, which strive to offer a higher quality product as it is associated to the increase of prices. The aim of the research was to analyze the market forces on coffee production in the province of El Oro and Ecuador in the last eight years. The results obtained reflect that the Ecuadorian annual average production has been reduced by 13.20% in addition, exports of green coffee do not represent an important source of income as their average annual growth rate is negative (-20,92%) to take into account the production of sacks of 60 kg. The reduction of the levels of green coffee production fails to meet domestic demand in the coffee industry, which is currently around 1.5 million bags of 60 kg per year. Ecuador just contributes with 4.4% of the demand, the remainder is imported from countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, which leads to a significant export of capital. The levels of production in the period 2009-2016 at the provincial level, had a tendency to the steady decline with an average annual growth rate of 50.97%, associated primarily with affectations by pests and diseases.
