Summary:OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of the use of TRX suspension exercises versus CORE exercises in the muscular strengthening of the abdominal girdle in young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve healthy male participants, aged 18-30 years, were included in the project. The participants, from “Universidad de las Américas”, were randomly selected from the martial arts and self-defense clubs and divided into two experimental groups; each of six participants. A first experimental group (1) was designated as the CORE Group (GC), to perform a training plan based on exercises of the central musculature. The second experimental group (2) was designated as the TRX Group (GT) to perform a training plan based on TRX suspension exercises. Both groups trained 4 times a week for two months. RESULTS: The statistical analysis made did not show a significant increase in strength after the training period (p equal to 0.09) in relation to the CORE group and TRX group. The abdominal perimeter did not show any significant decrease (p equal to 0.74) in relation to the other two groups. On the other hand, in the muscle recruitment, the prone plank exercise for the rectus abdominis did not show a significant increase (p equal to 0.08). Similarly the muscle recruitment in the prone plank exercise for the external oblique, did not show a significant increase (p equal to 0.07). Furthermore, in the muscle recruitment in the lateral plank exercise for the rectus abdominis, there was not a significant increase (p equal to 0.8). Finally, in the muscle recruitment on lateral plank exercise for the external oblique, there was not a significant increase either (p equal to 0.4) in relation to the two groups.
