This fact has affected the democratic system of Puerto Rico by dividing the population into different political parties that take opposing stands on what the future of the island should be. The final decision about the future of Puerto Rico depends on both the Puerto Rican and the United States governments. It will be a complicated process which will affect the lives of Americans and Puerto Ricans indefinitely.
